CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta - The social media world is abuzz with a video capturing the moment when the face of French President Emmanuel Macron was nudged by his wife, Brigitte Macron, as they were about to disembark from the plane. On Sunday, May 25, the couple was seen arriving in Hanoi, Vietnam, marking the beginning of their Southeast Asia tour.
According to Reuters reports, as Emmanuel was about to exit the presidential plane, a hand appeared, pushing his face. The person pushing the French President appeared to be wearing red attire, as shown in the video shared by various media including BBC. Apparently, the person was unaware that the plane door was already wide open.
At first, Emmanuel Macron seemed slightly surprised by the push, then he waved and smiled to ease the tension captured by the camera. He then re-entered the plane. Shortly after, the couple walked down the plane stairs together. Brigitte was wearing a red blazer paired with black pants.
Emmanuel Macron: Just Joking Around
Initially, the lyse Palace denied the accuracy of the image, as reported by the French media Le Figaro. However, they later sought to downplay the incident. A palace official said, "It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh," according to Reuters.
"It was a moment of closeness," the official added, as reported by the news agency.
Emmanuel Macron also spoke up and insisted that what his wife did was just a playful gesture. "It was just a joke as we usually do," according to BBC.
"We argue and joke, and a video of that became a sort of geo-planet disaster," Macron told reporters on Monday, May 26, 2025, as quoted from ABC News. "In the world we live in, we don't have much time to waste" on discussing such topics, he emphasized.
24-Year Age Difference in Marriage
The love story of Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte has been quite controversial. Brigitte was a 39-year-old drama teacher at a Catholic school in northern France when Emmanuel, who was 15 years old at the time, became infatuated with her.
"For me, a young boy like that was very annoying," she said, as quoted by The Independent.
While Emmanuel's parents initially suspected that he was dating Brigitte's daughter, when the truth was finally revealed, he was sent to a boarding school.
"Emmanuel had to go to Paris," Brigitte recalled. "I told myself that he would fall in love with someone his own age. But it didn't happen."
They stayed in touch, although Brigitte made an effort to keep her distance from him to avoid disrupting her own children's lives, who were almost the same age as Emmanuel. "It lasted for 10 years," she reminisced.
Brigitte separated from her husband, Andr-Louis Auzire, in 2006. A year later, Brigitte (then 54 years old) married Emmanuel Macron (then 29 years old) at a seaside resort named Le Touquet, where she had previously married her ex-husband. Emmanuel Macron became the President of France in 2017, around 10 years after he and Brigitte got married.
