TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied having any connection with parties involved in the case of the late American financier, Jeffrey Epstein.
Anwar's denial was conveyed through a post on the social media platform X on Sunday, February 1. As reported by Bernama, he stated that he had only recently learned that an external party had attempted to meet with him and had included his name in an email now associated with the Epstein Files.
In the post, Anwar emphasized that he had never been in contact with Jeffrey Epstein or any other party involved in the exchange of emails. "Praise be to Allah, for the past dozen years, as stated in the email, I have had absolutely no connection with any of the parties exchanging those emails, especially Epstein," Anwar wrote.
United Fleet's Pressure
Anwar's statement follows pressure from Armada, the youth wing of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party. The group demanded that Anwar provide an explanation regarding allegations that he had directly or indirectly interacted with Epstein or other individuals mentioned in documents released by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).
The documents are part of the Epstein Files archive, which was published as part of an effort to bring transparency to the investigation of Epstein's case. Several prominent names and world figures are mentioned in the documents, including Anwar.
Contents of the Email in the Epstein Archive
According to a report from Free Malaysia Today, one of the emails now under scrutiny is dated February 21, 2012. The email was sent by an Epstein associate whose identity was anonymized by the United States Department of Justice.
In the email, the Epstein associate inquired about the necessity of arranging a meeting between Anwar and someone named "Jes" to explore potential future benefits for "JPM," referring to the US bank JP Morgan and Jes Staley, who was then the CEO of JP Morgan’s investment bank.
"Should we arrange a private meeting for Jes with Anwar? If he becomes prime minister of Malaysia, he will clean up and it could be a gold mine for JPM. I know Anwar well, always stayed close to him for many years even though everybody said he’s finished and can never come back. Looks different now," the Epstein associate wrote.
In response, Epstein suggested that the meeting should take place in May and inquired whether Anwar would be traveling to the United States or Europe. He also proposed using the allure of the film industry as a draw. "You can tell him that Woody Allen is with me in Paris, and many countries are offering him money to make a movie in their country," Epstein wrote.
