TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An eight-goal thriller unfolded as Manchester City secured a 5-3 victory over Sunderland in Matchweek 5 of the 2026/27 Premier League season at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Antoine Semenyo netted a brace, while City's other three goals came from Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki, and Erling Haaland. Sunderland responded three times through Brian Brobbey, who recorded a hat-trick.
This victory keeps Manchester City perfect at the top of the table with 15 points from five matches, while Sunderland remains in 14th place with four points from five games.
Manchester City took an early lead in the 9th minute. Enzo Fernandez scored with a free-kick that rocketed into the top-right corner of the Sunderland goal, making it 1-0.
However, the lead lasted only three minutes. Brian Brobbey latched onto a long pass from Enzo Le Fee inside the penalty area before firing a powerful shot into the bottom-right corner to level the score at 1-1.
City regained the lead in the 29th minute. Rayan Cherki pounced on a ball from Semenyo amidst a scramble in the penalty area; his shot found the bottom-left corner, putting the hosts 2-1 ahead.
Sunderland equalized again four minutes later. Brobbey received a precise pass and fired a low shot into the left side of the goal. The goal was checked by VAR for a potential offside but was ultimately allowed to stand.
The Citizens took the lead again just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, a rebound fell to Semenyo outside the penalty area, and the City forward immediately unleashed a low drive to make it 3-2.
Early in the second half, City extended their lead in the 57th minute. Semenyo capitalized on an error by a Sunderland player near the penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot, bringing the score to 4-2.
Sunderland narrowed the deficit two minutes later. Brobbey received the ball inside the penalty area and quickly converted the chance. That goal completed Brobbey's hat-trick and brought the score to 4-3.
City nearly scored a fifth goal in the 66th minute. Cherki found space inside the penalty area after receiving a short pass, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
Sunderland then had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 71st minute. Brobbey pounced on a rebound, but Ruben Dias made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny the chance.
Manchester City finally sealed the victory in the 83rd minute. Haaland scored City's fifth goal after finding an opening in front of the net. The goal was initially disallowed for offside and checked by VAR, but was ultimately awarded by referee Robert Jones. The 5-3 scoreline remained until the final whistle.
