TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) claimed to have been conducting cyber patrols since August 23, 2025, as a preventive measure to prevent riots in Jakarta and other areas following plans for demonstrations in front of the House of Representatives (DPR).
"Cyber patrols have been conducting activities since the 23rd, we have been monitoring the tools on social media to see if they would have an offline impact. Therefore, this has become a preemptive and preventive activity that we have carried out," said the Director of Cyber Crime at the National Police Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim Polri), Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Aji, at the Bareskrim Polri building on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The week-long wave of demonstrations took place in Jakarta and then spread to many regions from August 25 to August 31, 2025. The public took to the streets to protest the allowances and performance of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR).
On Thursday night, August 28, 2025, the mass protests quickly escalated into public anger when a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) armored vehicle ran over an online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan, while attempting to disperse the demonstrators around the Pejompongan area of Jakarta. Affan died that night, sparking public outrage.
The following day, on Friday, August 29, 2025, a mass of motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) held a large demonstration in front of the Mobile Brigade Headquarters. Subsequently, riots occurred in Jakarta and spread to several regions. In Jakarta, at least 6 Transjakarta bus stops were set on fire, including several police posts, the East Jakarta Metro Police Resort building, and the planning office of the Central Jakarta Police Resort. In the regions, several regional council offices were targeted, including the council offices of Solo, Kediri, and West Nusa Tenggara.
Himawan emphasized that the police had taken preemptive and preventive measures to prevent the escalation of riots. The National Police cooperated with the Communication and Informatics Ministry to block 592 social media accounts that spread provocative and seditious narratives leading to unlawful actions.
"Blocking to prevent the viral spread of flyers or content posted on social media. Offline security has also been carried out at demonstration points in the regions," he said.
Regarding the provocative accounts inciting the public to commit unlawful actions, the National Police Criminal Investigation Department and the Jakarta Metro Police Cyber Crime Directorate have designated 7 people as suspects.
They are WH (31 years old), owner of the instagram account @Bekasi_menggugat; KA (24), 11th-semester student, owner of the instagram account @aliansimahasiswapenggugat; LFH (26 years old), contractual employee of an international organization, owner of the instagram account @larasfaizati; CS (30 years old), private employee, owner of the tiktok account @cecepmunich; IS (39 years old), owner of the tiktok account @hs02775; SB (35 years old), private employee, owner of the facebook account Nannu, and G (20 years old), owner of the facebook account Bambu Runcing.
