TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has ordered his administration to immediately repair public facilities damaged during last week’s demonstrations.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the President emphasized that restoring these facilities is essential to ensure people can resume daily activities without disruption.
“So that people can resume their activities smoothly,” Teddy said in a video uploaded to the Cabinet Secretariat’s official Instagram account, @sekretariat.kabinet, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
At Prabowo’s direction, Teddy held a meeting on Monday evening, August 1, with Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, along with the ministry’s secretary general and director general, at the Cabinet Secretariat building in Jakarta. The meeting focused on the progress of ongoing repair efforts.
“This meeting was held to discuss the progress related to the repair of several public facilities that have been damaged,” Teddy explained.
Protests have erupted across Indonesia since August 25, sparked by public anger over the multiplication of allowances for the House of Representatives (DPR) members amid worsening economic conditions. Demonstrators also opposed various government policies seen as unfavorable to the public, as well as tax hikes in multiple sectors.
Initially centered on the DPR building on Jalan Gatot Subroto, Central Jakarta, the protests escalated after Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, was fatally struck by a Mobile Brigade tactical vehicle in Tanah Abang, near the parliament complex.
Affan’s death ignited further outrage. Demonstrations quickly spread nationwide, with many condemning police brutality. Several police stations in Jakarta and Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) offices were torched during the unrest. The demonstrations have so far claimed ten lives.
