TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, announced that French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to visit Borobudur Temple in Magelang Regency on either May 28 or 29, 2025. According to Hasan, Macron expressed a desire to witness the beauty and magnificence of Borobudur, which is considered one of the wonders of the world.
To accommodate this request, the Indonesian government has arranged a stair lift to help President Macron reach the top of the temple. President Prabowo Subianto is also expected to accompany him during the visit.
“Borobudur is as high as this building. It’s a 12-story building. So, President Macron’s state visit is limited in time. Therefore, facilities to navigate each floor and level at Borobudur have been prepared,” Hasan said at the PCO office in Jakarta on Monday, May 26, 2025.
He explained that a step-free path will be provided up to the fourth level of the temple for both leaders, while a stair lift will be made available from either the fifth or eighth level to the top.
Hasan emphasized that the purpose of these installations is to streamline the visit.
“Using a stair lift to save time,” he stated.
He also assured that the installations will not harm the temple. The equipment, he noted, does not involve nails or drilling and is intended for temporary use only.
“So, it’s just placed there. Later, when it’s finished, it can be easily dismantled,” he added.
Previously, videos and images circulated on platforms such as X, YouTube, and Instagram, claiming to show escalator installation work at Borobudur Temple ahead of the upcoming visit by President Macron and President Prabowo on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The footage claimed that an escalator was being constructed to welcome the two leaders.
