Turkey Plans Construction of Bomb Shelters

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Turkey has started building bomb shelters in all provinces, according to a source familiar with the plan cited by Middle East Eye. According to the source, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has approved the project in a cabinet meeting in June.

The construction of bomb shelters was carried out as Iran and Israel were at war. Israel launched air strikes on Iran, and Tehran retaliated with ballistic missiles. The Turkish Housing Development Administration (TOK) has been tasked with building the bomb shelters.

Last month, a report prepared by the Turkish National Intelligence Academy on the 12-day war between Israel and Iran recommended that the government establish early warning systems and build comprehensive bomb shelters. The report recommended using subway stations in major cities and implementing measures to minimize civilian casualties in the event of a regional conflict.

Turkish officials were surprised by Israel's extensive network of bomb shelters in major cities, allowing civilians to take refuge during bombings.

On Tuesday, Turkish television station NTV reported that the purpose of this initiative is to create safe areas where civilians can be protected in the event of potential war or disasters, including nuclear threats.

The TV station noted that Turkey currently lacks adequate shelter infrastructure. The existing facilities fail to meet basic requirements.

The Ministry of Urbanization has also studied international examples such as Japan and Switzerland, according to the NTV report. Construction has commenced in specific cities, including the capital, Ankara.

The Turkish Protection Regulation, which was enforced in 1987, requires that buildings above a certain size have shelters. However, in practice, this regulation is often disregarded. Many shelter areas are used as parking lots or warehouses.
