TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The media and entertainment company, Warner Bros Discovery, is suing Midjourney in the federal district court of California, United States, for allegedly replicating a number of popular character images. The images of Superman, Wonder Woman, The Joker, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Scooby-Doo created by the artificial intelligence (AI) of Midjourney are considered to infringe on copyrights.
"Midjourney openly and intentionally violates copyrighted works, and we are filing this lawsuit to protect our content, partners, and investments," said Warner Bros Discovery management, cited from The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
The civil lawsuit was filed in court on the same date as the publication of the review. Warner Bros Discovery is seeking damages of US$150,000 or around Rp2.4 billion from Midjourney for each violated item of work.
As evidence, the animation studio attached dozens of image comparisons between the original animation and the AI works of Midjourney. One highlighted example is the 3D animated Bugs Bunny that reflects the adaptation in Space Jam: A New Legacy.
Warner Bros Discovery considers Midjourney's AI feature, which can create images of well-known characters, to be very attention-grabbing. "As a result, people are reluctant to buy posters or other official products sold by Warner Bros," quoted the management's statement.
Established in 2022, Midjourney had also been sued by Walt Disney Co and Universal Picture for similar issues. The developers of these popular cultural characters feel that the intellectual wealth invested for decades has been stolen. Both entities then sued Midjourney in the federal district court of Los Angeles in June 2025.
