TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Destry Damayanti, candidate for Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), underwent the fit and proper test at the Commission XI of the House of Representatives (DPR) today, Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The woman, who is also the senior deputy governor of the central bank, is currently serving as acting BI governor, replacing Perry Warjiyo, who resigned on July 27, 2026.

In her presentation to the DPR members, Destry presented her vision for Red and White Synergy for the Welfare of the Indonesian People should she become BI Governor. With this vision, Destry wants the central bank to be adaptive and innovative to support stability, growth, and sustainability. "Maintaining the direction from the beginning, expanding the vision to answer the trust and bigger challenges," she said.

Destry explained that Indonesia is still facing several global challenges, including geopolitical risks, an economic slowdown, vulnerable financial markets, rising inflation, volatile capital flows, and risks associated with digitalization.

However, some of Indonesia's macroeconomic indicators remain strong. Inflation and the rupiah exchange rate are stable, and the country's external resilience, financial system, and domestic economy are growing. "This is the positive impact of government policy stimuli and Bank Indonesia's policy mix," she said.

To address the existing challenges, Destry also stated that she has five missions for the central bank under her future leadership. First, Bank Indonesia will strengthen its policy mix to maintain exchange rate stability and drive growth.

Second is optimizing data management and maintaining economic sovereignty through the regulation of foreign exchange traffic. Third, create inclusive, sustainable Islamic finance. Fourth, strengthen credibility and accelerate digital innovation toward institutional governance. Fifth, reinforce coordination to advance and enhance Indonesia's quality.

Destry says that BI's policy mix aims to create a conducive economic climate. "Maintaining price stability is the main prerequisite for creating independence, as the spirit of Asta Cita."

In a previous statement, the Chief Economist of Trimegah Sekuritas Indonesia, Fakhrul Fulvian, said that global economic changes in recent years have made the central bank's job much more complex. Inflation does not always come from demand; liquidity does not automatically turn into credit; financial markets increasingly determine financing conditions; technology changes how money moves. Meanwhile, domestic policies are directly affected by the global financial cycle.

Fakhrul said that various principles that have been the foundation of Bank Indonesia must still be maintained. He believes that independence, credibility, monetary discipline, price stability, and rupiah stability remain anchors that should not be compromised.

However, according to him, maintaining principles does not mean clinging to all old methods. "The old world has changed, but it does not mean that its best principles should be discarded. Inflation targeting is still important, independence is still important, and credibility becomes even more valuable when the world becomes more uncertain."
