TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe relationship between each spectacle within the constellation is so diverse that being under the same sky doesn’t guarantee the same experience. For instance, there are a myriad of places where the sun never sets in the high latitudes just above 66.56 degrees. Bounded by the insurmountable beams of light during mid-April and late August, these destinations hear more clatter at nighttime.

For those living far away from the Earth’s axial tilt, let’s see the wonder of summer havens and meet the reality of polar day here.

Top Places Where the Sun Never Sets

While it’s universally known that the Earth rotates around the sun, some corners are more prone to tangled clocks. So, where does the sun never set? Here are the top destinations according to World Atlas and Conde Nast Traveler.

1. Norway

Norway spends glorious summer days basking in never-ending light, creating dreamlike landscapes for breathtaking cities like Tromsø and Svalbard. From mid-April to late August, the sun arrives in a slow loop without rest, where locals and visitors hike up Mount Storsteinen late in the evening. With the absence of clocks, some entertainment sources like boat trips and fjord sightings become even more popular.

2. Iceland

As the name suggests, Iceland is the place where the sun almost never sets during the summer solstice. In between enchanting peninsulas and cliffs, destinations like Reykjavik and Dryhólaey emerge as travel superstars that showcase only blush-colored and pale blue sky above. Underneath the sleepless sunlight, some residents rejoice in the phenomenon by rolling naked through fields as a means to preserve a longstanding tradition.

3. Alaska, USA

For Americans dreaming of longer days with better opportunities for light beams, Alaska comes in handy in the summer. Here, excited hikers spend 24/7 into the woods to come meet the majestic Alaskan wilderness. The seclusion of its remote location often brings awe to the town’s dwellers, taking them deeper into nature through helicopter runs and boat trips.

4. Yukon, Canada

Often cited among the coldest places on Earth, Canada’s Yukon faces a similar fate to Alaska. As the summer solstice rolls in, Canadians gear up for a midnight run, late-evening sports, and more festivities around a sunlit 11 p.m. For decades, travelers have been flocking to these stunning treasures, thanks to their endless natural wonders, from the classic lush forests and rocky shorelines to the spectacular granite peaks.

5. Antarctica

Antarctica experiences temperatures differently than most destinations in the world, as it is the place where the sun never sets. Unlike the rest of the contenders on the list, only a few populations are favored in the Antarctic peninsulas. For many years already, it has become so exclusive that people begin to ask simple questions: why can’t you fly over Antarctica?.

6. Greenland

With more than 80 percent of the island covered by ice sheets, Greenland evidently becomes one of the top destinations for skiers. The midnight sun is celebrated from late May to late July, as many residents enjoy outdoor activities underneath the circling sun.

7. Finland

Finnish obsession with saunas is a living testament to the residents' tangled biological clocks. While winter is seemingly spent in an endless loop, so is summer. Residents and travelers are possibly exposed to 76 days of perpetual morning light. During this time, Finnish cuisine mostly revolved around dairy, wholemeal products, and berries, making a visit even more interesting.

8. Sweden

When it comes to the places where the sun never sets, Sweden is often overshadowed, all because of the country’s varying climates. Among the 10.5 million population, only 13% of them reportedly live in the frozen north, where the midnight sun mostly appears.

At the same time, the country is deployed as the center of an effort to save many endangered animals and birds due to its rich habitats consisting of broadleaved woodlands, ancient forests, wetlands, and mountains.

From Scandinavia to the poles, the midnight sun creates unforgettable landscapes and traditions. For travelers asking: where does the sun never set, these destinations offer a rare glimpse of Earth’s most dazzling phenomenon.
