TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - While the vast majority of countries maintain armed forces to protect their sovereignty, a small number have chosen a different path. These nations, despite having no standing army, are remarkably safe and are frequently ranked among the most peaceful countries in the world.

Their security is often maintained through a combination of robust police forces, regional security partnerships, and international defense agreements.

The CIA World Factbook, as cited by CNBC, lists 36 countries and territories without traditional armed forces. Many of them rely on other nations and international pacts for their defense.

For example, Liechtenstein's collective defense is provided by Switzerland and Austria, while Andorra is protected by Spain and France. According to the Times of India, these are some of the countries without a standing army that are particularly safe for travel.

Countries Without an Army That Are Safe for Vacation

1. Monaco

As one of the world's smallest nations, Monaco does not require a standing army. Its defense is the responsibility of France, as per an existing agreement between the two countries. However, the country maintains its own police force to handle internal security.

Renowned for its luxury, glamour, and minimal crime rate, Monaco is a sought-after destination for affluent travelers. Visitors can enjoy its world-famous casinos, a harbor filled with impressive yachts, and the excitement of the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

2. Iceland

Iceland abolished its standing army in 1869 and instead relies on NATO agreements and defense cooperation with the United States. Despite the lack of a military, Iceland has consistently been ranked as the most peaceful country in the world for over a decade on the Global Peace Index. Its low crime rate ensures that tourists feel secure.

According to Travel and Tour World, Iceland's peace is attributed not just to its geographical isolation but also to careful governance and a social contract that emphasizes trust, transparency, and community. The country's internal security is managed by its coast guard and police. With minimal crime, the primary concerns for visitors are natural hazards like volcanoes, slick roads, and unpredictable weather.

3. Grenada

The Caribbean island of Grenada has been without a standing army since 1983. Its security is overseen by the Royal Grenada Police Force and is bolstered by regional defense cooperation. This makes it a secure destination for tourists. Known as the "Spice Isle" for its nutmeg and cocoa plantations, Grenada's pristine beaches, waterfalls, and friendly population make it a relaxing and safe place to visit.

4. Costa Rica

In 1949, Costa Rica's constitution was amended to abolish its military. Funds previously allocated for defense were redirected to essential services such as education, healthcare, and environmental protection. Today, Costa Rica is regarded as a model of peace and stability in Central America. The country maintains a civilian police force but no military.

5. Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein disbanded its military in 1868 due to the high costs of maintenance. Since then, the country has relied on Switzerland and Austria for its defense and neutrality. It still has a local police force, and its crime rate is among the lowest in Europe. Tourists can explore medieval castles, hike scenic mountain trails, and feel secure in this prosperous financial hub.

6. Panama

After years of political unrest, Panama abolished its military in 1990. The nation's security is now managed by the Panamanian Public Forces, which includes the police, border security, and coast guard.

Panama has become a rapidly expanding center for trade and tourism, thanks to the Panama Canal. Popular destinations like Panama City and the San Blas Islands are considered safe for visitors.

7. Palau

Under the Compact of Free Association, Palau's defense is guaranteed by the United States. As a result, this Pacific island nation does not maintain a standing army. Internal security is handled locally, and the reliance on international agreements ensures a high level of safety for visitors. Palau is a tropical paradise, famous for its world-renowned diving sites such as the Blue Corner and Jellyfish Lake.

8. Dominica

Dominica, a haven for hikers and divers, disbanded its army in 1981. To maintain security, the country relies on a police force and a coast guard. Like Grenada, this island also benefits from regional security agreements.
