TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team started their journey in the ASEAN Championship 2026, also known as the AFF Cup 2026, with a resounding 5-1 victory over Cambodia at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor, on Monday night, July 27, 2026. Debutant Mitchell Baker became the star of the match after scoring a hat-trick in his first game with the Garuda squad.
Baker opened the scoring for Indonesia in the fifth minute with a header from a free kick by Thom Haye. He then doubled the lead nine minutes later after receiving a pass from Eliano Reijnders.
Indonesia's third goal was scored by Sandy Walsh in the 23rd minute. He finished off a pass from Thom Haye, giving John Herdman's team a 3-0 lead before halftime.
Cambodia managed to reduce the deficit two minutes into the second half. Sokmeng Chea scored through a corner kick situation in the 47th minute. The ball was initially touched by goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata but still crossed the goal line.
Indonesia extended their lead in the 55th minute. Baker completed his hat-trick after maximizing a pass from Thom Haye. For Haye, the assist became his third in this match. Jens Raven then rounded off Indonesia's goal fest in the 85th minute. The young striker capitalized on a goalmouth scramble to change the score to 5-1.
Throughout the match, Indonesia appeared dominant after scoring early goals. The Garuda team threatened several times through Beckham Putra, Thom Haye, Ivar Jenner, Dony Tri Pamungkas, and Saddil Ramdani. Towards the end of the match, Indonesia also had a goal disallowed by the referee.
On the other hand, Cambodia put up a fight through Ty Sa, Devit Yem, and Yudai Ogawa, but only managed to score one consolation goal.
This victory marks a positive start for Indonesia in Group A of the ASEAN Championship 2026. The result places the Garuda squad in third place in the temporary standings, while Cambodia sits in fourth place.
