TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Australian government has requested Tesla to recall 7,301 units of the Model Y in late August. The Kangaroo State regulator complained about defects in the software system that caused the windows on the driver's and passenger's sides to close too quickly.
"If a body part is in the window space when the driver's side window is closing, it can increase the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant," as stated by the Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts on its official website, uploaded on Friday, August 29, 2025.
The Model Y car is the 5th series of Tesla introduced in March 2019. The production of the SUV crossover fleet began in January 2020 at the Fremont plant in California, United States. This Tesla product was officially introduced in Indonesia in March 2022, amidst the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2022. Consumers in Australia have also been using it since August 2022.
The Australian authorities stated that consumers affected by the Model Y system defects will be contacted by Tesla in writing. In the short term, this issue is being addressed with Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates, which will be reinstalled on all affected vehicle units.
It is believed that the Model Y with software version 2025.26.6 or newer is not affected by this issue. Consumers can confirm the vehicle's software version by tapping on 'Controls', then 'Software' on the touch screen. "Applies to all variants in the Model Y," as stated by Australian authorities.
The window control issue had previously occurred in 2022. The U.S. Department of Transportation, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, sent Tesla a letter regarding issues with its Model 3 (2017–2022), Model S (2021–2022), Model X (2021–2022), and Model Y (2020–2022) vehicles.
In that year, the U.S. authorities estimated that there were 1,096,762 problematic Tesla units. "A closing window may exert excessive force by pinching a driver or passenger before retracting, increasing the risk of injury," as stated in the official statement by the U.S. Department of Transportation, published on September 21, 2022.
