TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has lifted its early tsunami warning triggered by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in the Sulawesi Sea, near the southern coast of Mindanao, the Philippines, after monitoring showed no significant rise in sea levels.
BMKG Chief Teuku Faisal Fathani said in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday that the termination of the warning was officially declared at 10:15 AM Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
“Considering the latest observations from several affected areas, there is no longer any significant sea level rise that poses a danger. Therefore, the tsunami early warning is declared over,” he said.
He added that the decision was important to allow joint disaster response teams, including the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), regional disaster mitigation agencies (BPBD), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and the military and police, to proceed with consolidation and emergency response operations in affected areas.
Before the warning was lifted, BMKG coastal tide gauge stations had recorded tsunami wave arrivals in several locations.
The highest tsunami wave was recorded at 75 centimeters in Palengen, Sangihe, North Sulawesi at 08:20 AM WIB.
Other wave anomalies were detected in Paleleh, Central Sulawesi (45 cm), Melonguane (32 cm), Tahuna (30 cm), Bitung (29 cm), as well as Loloda (9 cm) and Ternate in North Maluku (14 cm).
Regarding earthquake impacts, BMKG said the strongest shaking was felt in Miangas and Melonguane, reaching intensity level VI MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), where shaking is felt by all residents and can cause plaster to fall and minor structural damage.
Shaking at level V MMI was recorded in Siau and Tagulandang, while areas such as Morotai, North Halmahera, and Manado experienced level IV MMI tremors, which were strong enough to wake many residents from sleep.
As of 10:00 AM WIB, BMKG recorded 20 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 3.9 to 6.7, including two that were felt by the public.
Although the tsunami warning has been lifted, BMKG urged residents to remain cautious of possible structural damage caused by aftershocks and to check the safety of buildings before returning indoors.
