Breakdown of International Student Demographics at Harvard University

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has banned Harvard University from admitting foreign students. The Trump administration has also halted the certification of student and exchange visitor programs at the top university, as it is deemed to foster violence, antisemitism, and coordinate with the Communist Party of China.

Harvard University is the oldest university in the United States, established on September 8, 1636, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Originally named New College, its primary purpose was to educate ministers in the American colonies.

Harvard University has admitted international students under the academic F-1 visa program for 70 consecutive years, the university stated in its federal lawsuit against the Trump administration. This program, provided by the U.S. government under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and overseen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, enables international students to pursue their education at Harvard University.

This prestigious university has also long been designated the sponsor of exchange programs for nonimmigrant J-1 (exchange visitor) students. Both programs allow students from other countries to receive an education at Harvard. In the academic year 2024/2025, nearly 70,000 international students from 147 countries are enrolled at Harvard, accounting for approximately 27 percent of the total school enrollment.

The top five countries of origin for foreign Harvard students are China, Canada, India, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, roughly reflecting the composition of international students across the United States. Harvard also has a relatively large global alumni network, with nearly 20 percent of Harvard graduates living outside the U.S.

By comparison, in the fall of 2024, Yale University had 3,639 international scholars, including trainees, researchers, students, and others from 129 countries. Columbia University reported 16,926 international students and scholars, including faculty and researchers from 149 countries.

Students from other countries compete in many sports at Harvard University. Citing Sportico, Harvard University has 42 university-level sports teams. In the academic year 2024-2025, approximately 21 percent of athletes, or 196, are from abroad.

Boosting the U.S. Economy

International students at Harvard contribute not only academic and athletic talent to their campus, but also billions of dollars to economic activity across the nation.

According to the Association of International Educators (NAFSA), 1.1 million international students in U.S. colleges and universities contributed $43.8 billion to the U.S. economy during the 2023-2024 academic year and supported over 378,000 jobs.
