TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim has been named a suspect in a corruption case related to the procurement of Chromebook laptops for the 2019-2022 period. The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) announced the decision on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
Beyond the case, attention has also turned to Nadiem’s personal wealth.
Wealth Reported in 2020
According to the State Officials’ Wealth Report (LHKPN) website, Nadiem last reported his wealth on March 31, 2021, covering the 2020 fiscal year. At that time, his total net worth stood at Rp1.19 trillion (Rp1,192,425,517,883).
This included the following assets:
1. Land and Buildings – Rp50.98 billion
Land (24,739 m²) in Rote Ndao, Rp176.88 million.

From this, Nadiem’s total wealth amounted to Rp1.37 trillion. However, he also declared debts of Rp180.82 billion, bringing his net worth down to Rp1.19 trillion in 2020.
This was a decline compared to 2019, when he reported Rp1.22 trillion.
Corruption Allegations
The AGO’s Director of Investigation at the Special Crimes Unit, Nurcahyo Jungkung Madyo, confirmed that investigators had gathered enough evidence to name Nadiem as a suspect.
“Today, investigators named one suspect with the initials NAM, who served as Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology from 2019 to 2024,” Nurcahyo said at a press conference on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
According to the AGO, Nadiem allegedly instructed four ministry officials during a Zoom meeting on May 6, 2020, to procure laptops based on ChromeOS from Google.
However, prosecutors noted that the comparative study claiming Chromebook’s superiority over Windows laptops was only published in June 2020, after the instruction had already been given.
In an earlier statement, AGO alleged that Nadiem instructed the four suspects during a Zoom meeting on May 6, 2020, to procure laptops using ChromeOS from Google.
Yet, the study concluding that Chromebooks outperformed other products, including Windows, was only released a month later, in June 2020.
