TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of State Secretariat Juri Ardiantoro was brief when asked about the government's stance on the 17+8 people's demands. He confirmed that the government had received the public's aspirations, which consist of 17 short-term and 8 long-term demands.

"It has been received. I received it, along with the minister (of the state secretariat)," Juri said on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in the Rawamangun area of East Jakarta.

Juri stated that the government would follow up on all the demands. However, he couldn't specify a timeline for the demands that had already passed their deadline.

"Don't ask when, it's done. It was explained yesterday," he said.

The 17+8 demands are a summary of various pressures that have circulated on social media since the demonstrations on Thursday, August 28, 2025. The government and the House of Representatives were given a deadline of September 5, 2025, to fulfill the 17 short-term demands and one year for the remaining 8 long-term demands.

Among the short-term demands were the formation of an independent investigation team for the cases of Affan Kurniawan and all victims of violence and human rights violations by authorities during the August 28-30 protests. Other demands included the release of all detained demonstrators and an end to the military's involvement in civil security.

On Friday, September 5, 2025, the Presidential Palace invited a dozen student organizations. State Secretariat Minister Prasetyo Hadi and Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto received the student representatives.

During the meeting, Kaleb Otniel Aritonang, Chair of the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Veteran Jakarta University (UPNVJ), urged the government to fulfill the 17+8 People's Demands. This movement is a summary of popular discussions on social media. One of the demands is for the House of Representatives to cut salary and allowance increases for its members and to cancel plans for new facilities and pension benefits.

Kaleb also called on the government to enforce civilian supremacy, rejecting militarism. "Reject militarism. The military should be the state's tool and should return to the barracks," he stated.
