DONALD Trump stated his desire to meet again with the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un. Trump expressed his wish at the White House while talking with the newly elected South Korean President, Lee Jae Myung.
"I want to meet him this year. I hope to meet Kim Jong Un at the right time in the future," said Trump to reporters on Monday, August 25, 2025.
"I want to meet. My relationship with him is very good," said Trump as quoted by Sky News. He added that he used to be very close with Kim Jong Un during his first term as president.
"We feel we can do something about it," he said. He also mentioned his desire to help improve the relationship between the two Koreas.
Trump and Kim held three meetings between 2018 and 2019 during his first term in office. Trump also exchanged a number of letters with Kim Jong Un. In June 2019, Trump even stepped into North Korea from the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) with South Korea.
On Monday, Trump responded to questions about whether he would return to the DMZ as he did last time. "Remember when I walked across the line and everyone went crazy, especially the Secret Service," said Trump to reporters in the Oval Office.
"But I liked it," said Trump. He added that he felt safe because of his good relationship with Kim.
Donald Trump became the first sitting American president to set foot in North Korean territory six years ago. Regarding the nuclear program, Trump stated in March of this year that Pyongyang is a "nuclear power".
Since Trump stepped down from office, his relationship with Kim Jong Un has ended. North Korea has shown no interest in resuming talks with the United States.
The White House stated in June that Trump would welcome communication with Kim Jong Un. Efforts to restore this relationship occurred after the election of Lee Jae Myung in South Korea, who has promised to reopen dialogue with North Korea.
