TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that 51 houses in the Cipta Mulya Traditional Village area, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, were destroyed by a fire that recently razed through the area. Some of the houses were scorched, and others were partially damaged.
"The initial suspicion is that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit," said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, in Jakarta on Monday.
He explained that the disaster affected 159 people from 51 households. Of these, 132 people fled to relatives' homes, and 27 others took refuge in the Kasepuhan Cipta Mulya field tents.
Authorities also noted that in addition to residential areas, the fire also destroyed houses of worship, a preschool (PAUD) building, public sanitation facilities, and even traditional rice barns and mills belonging to the local indigenous community.
"The fire has been extinguished. On Monday, July 27, joint personnel cleared the debris," he said.
Abdul confirmed that the Sukabumi Regency Government has activated the Disaster Emergency Response Post and established field kitchens and shelter tents, as well as logistics and posts, to aid affected residents.
To assist with disaster management, the National Disaster Management Agency has prepared emergency aid in the form of 100 basic food packages, one set of shelter tents, 50 household kits, and two portable toilets.
