TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Under the leadership of Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono, Indonesia’s diplomacy has drawn scrutiny from former diplomats and international relations experts. One critique came from former Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal in late December 2025. He urged Sugiono—who also serves as Secretary-General of the Gerindra Party—to devote more time to leading the Foreign Ministry. Dino, the son of senior diplomat Hasjim Djalal, also raised concerns about the transparency of foreign policy under Sugiono.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said Minister Sugiono has sought to build intensive communication with Indonesia’s ambassadors. That communication takes the form of coordination meetings as well as written instructions. “The Minister conveys directives to heads of mission and listens to their input on diplomatic strategy,” Yvonne said in written responses sent on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
