TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Housing Task Force head, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, revealed that 27 million families in the country live in uninhabitable homes, often in slums or makeshift huts without electricity or access to clean water.
“Honestly, you can’t even call some of them houses, but that’s the reality,” Hashim said during a land handover event for 30.7 hectares in South Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
Hashim explained that previous government data on housing was inaccurate and incomplete, making it difficult to design effective programs.
In response, President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the creation of a central housing data center, aligned with the Central Statistics Agency and under the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas).
“It can be carried out by Danantara, the Investment Ministry,” Hashim added.
To address the housing crisis, the government has launched a program to build 3 million affordable homes across Indonesia, targeting low-income communities.
Private sector partners are supporting the initiative, including the Lippo Group, which contributed 30.7 hectares of land in the Meikarta area, South Cikarang, West Java.
On this site, 18 apartment towers dedicated to low-income families will be constructed. “We hope to provide 140,000 apartment units to our people who want to own a house,” Hashim said.
Beyond providing decent housing, Hashim highlighted the economic benefits of the program. As the younger sibling of the president, he noted that the housing sector can have a multiplier effect of 1.5 to 5 times, creating ripple effects for other industries such as construction, contracting, and household furniture production.
