TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said Indonesia's economic policy adheres to free and active policy, which allows Indonesia economic ties with any country.
The minister said Indonesia's economic activities aligned with the country's free and active foreign policy. "The Indonesian government always prioritizes a free active foreign policy, and within this is the free active economic policy," he said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Thursday, April 16, 2026.
Indonesia, therefore, is free to interact with other countries "as long as we are committed to whom we have established ties with," Bahlil said.
Bahlil said Indonesia respects all agreements with other countries, including with Russia and Nigeria. "Especially our agreement with the United States," Bahlil said.
Earlier this week, Prabowo met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, April 13. According to Bahlil, Russia has agreed to supply Indonesia with crude oil.
After the meeting with Putin, Prabowo assigned Bahlil to discuss the details of the cooperation with the Russian government. "President Prabowo assigned Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia to meet with Putin's special envoy and the Russian Energy Minister for further detailed discussions in Moscow," said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in a written statement on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Through the agreement, Indonesia will obtain supplies of crude oil and LPG from Russia. This cooperation is being explored through government-to-government (G2G) as well as business-to-business (B2B) schemes.
Indonesia also welcomed expanding cooperation with Russia, including in the development of crude oil storage, long-term supply of crude oil and LPG, nuclear exploration, and cooperation in the mineral sector.
