TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno stated that Indonesia continues to optimize alternative oil sources in Africa to overcome national energy turmoil due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
"We are now collaborating extensively with Algeria, Nigeria, Angola, and many African countries," Havas said after a working meeting with House of Commission I at the Senayan Parliament Building in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by ANTARA.
Indonesia's current strategy, according to Havas, is to obtain oil supplies from regions without passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which is now closed again due to tensions between the United States and Iran.
These criteria make Africa a suitable alternative as an energy source for Indonesia, he added. "We have received a lot of oil supplies from Africa. So far, we are doing well," Havas said.
In addition to Africa, Indonesia is exploring opportunities to import oil from Latin American countries that produce oil and gas. "We're looking at many countries there that have oil and gas potential. Almost all countries in Latin America have this potential," Havas said.
Last April, Pertamina's Vice President of Corporate Communication, Muhammad Baron, said that Indonesia was considering Africa as an alternative energy source amid tensions in the Middle East.
"Pertamina and the government are always looking for alternative energy resources, including those from countries we have already been importing from, through Africa and other countries," Baron said.
Baron explained that this step aligns with the message conveyed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, regarding alternative sources of crude oil while the Strait of Hormuz remains closed due to war.
He also said that Pertamina continues to make optimal efforts to ensure the availability of fuel and LPG for the public and industry.
The government previously noted that around 20–25 percent of Indonesia's crude oil imports were shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.
Pertamina is also planning to find alternative ways to import oil after two tankers belonging to Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) remained stuck in the Arabian Gulf and were unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
