TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia U-23 national team achieved a commanding victory over Macau in the 2026 AFC U-23 Championship qualification match. The game, held at Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo, East Java, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, ended with a 5-0 scoreline in favor of the young Garuda squad.
This triumph places Indonesia in second position in Group J with four points, trailing only South Korea, who also secured a decisive win against Laos. Meanwhile, Laos and Macau are in third and fourth place, respectively.
Match Summary
Indonesia's coach, Gerald Vanenburg, made tactical adjustments for the match against Macau. He maintained his confidence in Cahya Supriadi as the goalkeeper and gave starts to Kakang Rudianto, Dion Markx, Frenky Missa, and Muhammad Alfharezzi Buffon in defense.
In the midfield, Vanenburg also made some alterations, fielding a trio of midfielders, Toni Firmansyah, Arkhan Fikri, and Ananda Raehan, to support the attacking front of Rayhan Hannan, Rahmat Arjuna, and Hokky Caraka. Key players Jens Raven and Rafael Struick were positioned on the bench.
The Indonesian team applied relentless pressure from the onset of the first half. Arkhan Fikri served as the offensive fulcrum, consistently challenging Macau's 5-3-2 defensive formation. Just four minutes in, Indonesia scored the opening goal via an own goal from Ieong Lek-Hang, who misjudged a pass from Rahmat Arjuna.
Indonesia extended their lead in the 17th minute. Following a defensive error by Macau in anticipating Frenky Missa's pass, Arkhan Fikri capitalized on the opportunity to score Indonesia's second goal.
Macau's attempts to counter Indonesia's pressure were stifled, and their counterattacks were too slow to pose a significant threat. Indonesia had several long-range shots on goal in the 30th and 35th minutes, but Macau's goalkeeper, Lam Chak Fong, managed to save them. The score remained 2-0 at halftime.
Second Half
Coach Vanenburg made a strategic change after the break, substituting Rafael Struick for Toni Firmansyah. Just one minute into the second half, Rayhan Hannan found the back of the net from a goalmouth scramble.
Indonesia maintained their dominance until the 60th minute. Vanenburg then introduced further rotations, replacing Arkhan Fikri with Zanandin Fariz. Jens Raven also entered the game to bolster Indonesia's attack.
Just eight minutes after coming on, Zanadin made his mark. He unleashed a curving shot from outside the penalty box that goalkeeper Lam Chak Fong was unable to stop, bringing the score to 4-0 in favor of Indonesia.
Zanadin was once again pivotal in Indonesia's offense. In the 74th minute, he delivered a brilliant through-pass to Struick inside Macau's penalty area, and Struick's shot was unstoppable. The match concluded with a 5-0 scoreline after five minutes of injury time.
