TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned on Monday, April 13, 2026, that "no port in the Gulf and the Sea of Oman will be safe" after the United States imposed a blockade on shipping traffic to and from Iranian ports through the Strait of Hormuz.
Port security in the Gulf and Sea of Oman must apply "either for everyone or for no one,” the IRGC said in a statement broadcast by Iranian state television, IRIB, as quoted from Anadolu.
The Iranian armed forces, according to the statement, consider the defense of the country's legal rights a legitimate obligation, including the exercise of sovereignty over territorial waters.
“Enemy-affiliated vessels” will be prohibited from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while other vessels will be able to pass according to regulations set by Iran.
The IRGC also stated that Iran will implement a permanent mechanism to control the Strait of Hormuz, even after a war.
“The restrictions imposed by the criminal United States on maritime movement in international waters are illegal and amount to piracy,” the statement said.
Previously, the US announced it would impose a blockade on Iranian ports starting Monday at 02:00 p.m. GMT (09:00 p.m. Jakarta time).
The move came after direct talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, ended without an agreement on Saturday.
