TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A weather modification operation (OMC) was carried out through three flight stages on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, to anticipate potential extreme rainfall that could cause flooding in Jakarta. This operation was carried out by the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in collaboration with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Indonesian Air Force, and related ministries and institutions.

Jakarta BPBD Chief Executive Isnawa Adji stated that OMC is part of the regional government's ongoing mitigation efforts in the face of extreme weather dynamics. "Cloud seeding is carried out based on an analysis of atmospheric conditions," Isnawa said, as quoted on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

OMC was implemented using an Indonesian Air Force CASA 212-200 A-2105 aircraft based at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base. The operation consisted of three flight stages targeting several areas around Jakarta.

The first stage was carried out in the morning with cloud seeding in Bogor Regency. The seeding targeted stratocumulus, stratus, and cumulus humilis clouds at altitudes of 7,000 to 8,000 feet using 800 kilograms of calcium oxide seeding material.

The second phase was carried out during the day, with the seeding location in the Sunda Strait at altitudes of 9,100 to 9,400 feet. This phase used 800 kilograms of sodium chloride seeding material to direct potential rainfall into the waters.

Meanwhile, the third phase was carried out in the afternoon, targeting the Lebak area, Banten Province. Seeding was carried out on stratocumulus and cumulus humilis clouds with cloud tops below 7,000 feet using 800 kilograms of calcium oxide seeding material.

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) stated that it continues to conduct daily evaluations and strengthen inter-agency coordination to ensure the safe and effective implementation of the OMC. The public is advised to remain alert for the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by lightning, thunder, and strong winds.
