TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake rocked the Banda Sea region in Maluku on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 09.50.45 WIB (Western Indonesia Time).

The BMKG analysis indicates that the updated parameters of this earthquake are M5.4. The epicenter was located at 6.72° S; 129.96° E, precisely in the sea 203 kilometers northwest of Saumlaki in the Maluku Islands, at a depth of 172 kilometers.

"Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a moderate earthquake caused by rock deformation within the Banda Sea Plate," said Daryono, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami at BMKG, on Tuesday. "The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that the earthquake had a strike-slip movement mechanism."

Based on the estimated Shakemap, this earthquake caused tremors in the Amahai area of Central Maluku and in Dawelor Dawera and the Babar Islands of Southwest Maluku, with an MMI intensity of III-IV. This means that many people in their homes felt it during the day.

There have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake to date. Modeling results indicate that the earthquake is not likely to trigger a tsunami.

As of 10:07 AM, the BMKG has not detected any aftershocks.
