TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meta is updating its protection features for teen users by adding a system that can notify parents if a child's conversation with Meta AI leads to self-harm.
According to Endgaget, citing ANTARA, this feature aims to strengthen parental supervision of teenagers' activities on Meta's platform. Previously, the company opened access to conversation topics between teenagers and artificial intelligence (AI) for families.
Meta explains that when underage users discuss topics that indicate a risk to personal safety, Meta AI will still direct them to relevant support services and encourage them to seek help from trusted adults.
From now on, the system will also send notifications to parents or guardians connected through the family monitoring feature. In addition to notifications, Meta will provide information resources and guidance on steps they can take to help their child.
To implement this feature, Meta developed a custom AI system designed to detect risky conversations. However, before notifications are sent, every conversation flagged by the AI is reviewed by a team of human users to reduce the possibility of errors and avoid unnecessary panic.
However, the company stated that it will prioritize caution. In cases where the situation remains unclear, Meta can still send warnings to parents if there are indications of risky behavior.
This feature is already available to Instagram users who use parental controls in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Meta aims to make the feature available to all users who have activated the family monitoring feature by the end of this year.
Additionally, Meta is developing the ability to contact emergency services if a conversation with Meta AI indicates a safety risk requiring immediate attention. This feature is planned for both teen and adult users.
Meta is also extending the "Limited Content" setting to interactions with Meta AI. This means that if a parent enables sensitive content restrictions on Instagram, their child's AI conversations will also be subject to similar restrictions.
