TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Microsoft says that Aurora, its newest AI model, can predict air quality, typhoons, storms, and other weather events with a high level of accuracy. The model was trained on more than one million hours of data sourced from satellites, radar, weather stations, simulations, and previous forecasts.
In a paper published in Nature and in a blog post last week, Microsoft explained that Aurora is able to forecast atmospheric conditions more quickly and accurately than conventional meteorological approaches. The AI model’s performance can also be fine-tuned with additional data to deliver more detailed predictions for specific weather events.
AI-powered weather models have been around for some time. Google DeepMind, for instance, has released several in recent years, including WeatherNext, which the lab says outperforms some of the world’s leading forecasting systems.
Microsoft is presenting Aurora as one of the most advanced models in the field and a valuable tool for research institutions focused on weather science, according to a review by TechCrunch on Monday, May 26, 2025.
During trials, Aurora accurately predicted the landfall of Typhoon Doksuri in the Philippines four days in advance, earlier than several expert forecasts. Microsoft also reported that Aurora outperformed the National Hurricane Center’s five-day forecast during the 2022-2023 tropical cyclone season. In another case, the AI model successfully predicted a major sandstorm in Iraq in 2022.
While its training process required substantial computing power, Aurora is seen as highly efficient. It can generate forecasts in a matter of seconds, in contrast to traditional systems that may take hours on supercomputers.
Microsoft has announced that it has made Aurora’s source code and model weights publicly available. The company has also started integrating the technology into the MSN Weather app, with a specialized version offering hourly forecasts that include cloud information.
