TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has officially named former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim a suspect in a corruption case linked to the procurement of Chromebook laptops during the 2019-2024 period.
Prosecutors allege that Nadiem, during his tenure as minister, made an agreement with Google to select Chromebooks as the item for procurement. Nadiem, however, rejected the accusation.
Wearing the prosecution’s signature pink detainee vest, Nadiem appeared calm as he left the AGO’s Special Crimes Unit building. “I have done nothing wrong. God will protect me, and the truth will prevail,” he said before entering a detention car on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
The AGO has charged Nadiem under Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 of the Corruption Eradication Law in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code.
Director of Investigation at the Special Crimes Unit, Nurcahyo Jungkung Madyo, told reporters that investigators had gathered sufficient evidence to proceed.
“Based on the examination of witnesses, experts, documents, and other physical evidence, the Special Crimes Unit has determined one additional suspect with the initials NAM,” Nurcahyo said at a press conference on Thursday.
The Chromebook procurement corruption case has so far implicated five suspects. Alongside Nadiem, the AGO earlier named four others on July 15, 2025: Nadiem’s former special staffer, Jurist Tan; former ministry consultant, Ibrahim Arief; Sri Wahyuningsih, Director of Elementary Schools in 2020–2021; and Mulyatsyah, Director of Junior High Schools in 2020–2021.
