TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Presidential Palace has assured that the government will move swiftly to handle the impact of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The quake struck on Saturday morning, August 15, 2026, at around 5:58 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA).

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that he has coordinated with relevant agencies for disaster relief efforts. "This is to ensure full attention and readiness across all sectors during the early stages of this event," Prasetyo told reporters on Saturday.

These bodies include the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and the NTT Provincial Government.

Prasetyo explained that the move aims to ensure the post-quake emergency response remains measured and targeted while minimizing secondary risks for local communities.

The Palace, Prasetyo noted, continues to closely monitor real-time developments on the ground. "The government remains attentive to the situation and will ensure rapid intervention whenever necessary," the Gerindra Party politician said.

He also called on the public to offer prayers for those affected by the disaster. "Let us send our prayers to our brothers and sisters in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), who endured a massive earthquake this morning," he said.

The tremor on Flores Island struck on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 5:58 a.m. WITA. "The epicenter was located at sea at a depth of 15 kilometers, approximately 38 kilometers northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency," said Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, in a written statement.

According to Berton, the earthquake was felt intensely across several areas of East Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi. A preliminary report from the Sikka District Military Command (Kodim) indicated that the quake impacted the El Say Port area in Sikka Regency. The disaster resulted in two deaths and one injury.

The two fatalities were identified as a man and a woman. Field teams are currently collecting additional data as verification of the victim information continues.
