TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday, June 8, expressed profound concern over the powerful earthquake that struck the Philippines earlier that morning.

Issuing a statement in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar affirmed that Malaysia stands fully prepared to extend any form of assistance required by its neighbor.

"I wish to express my deepest concern following the powerful earthquake that struck off the southern Philippines earlier this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Filipino people. Malaysia stands ready to render whatever assistance may be required," Anwar Ibrahim said, as reported by Antara.

He underscored the enduring ties between the two nations, noting that Malaysia and the Philippines remain close friends and crucial partners within ASEAN.

Anwar offered prayers for the safety of everyone affected by the disaster, expressing hope that the victims would find the strength and fortitude to navigate the difficult days ahead.

The Prime Minister also voiced his concern regarding the domestic impact of the seismic event, as tremors reverberated across parts of Sabah, Malaysia.

He reassured citizens that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation, with emergency services already placed on full alert.

The massive 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines at 7:37 a.m. local time on Monday, June 8, originating at a depth of 50 kilometers. Seismologists located the epicenter at 5.7 degrees north latitude and 125.1 degrees east longitude.

The resulting tremors shook several areas around Tawau and Semporna in Sabah, as well as various regions across Indonesia. In response to the powerful maritime quake, both Indonesian and Malaysian authorities swiftly issued tsunami warnings for vulnerable coastal zones facing the Philippines.
