Prabowo, Canadian PM Eye New Cooperation After ICA-CEPA Signing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed new cooperation opportunities following the signing of the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA) last year, said Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia Jess Dutton, as reported by ANTARA.

At a media briefing in Jakarta on Wednesday, the Canadian Ambassador revealed that the two leaders held a telephone discussion on Saturday, June 6, to address the matter. Ambassador Dutton said Prime Minister Carney and President Prabowo identified opportunities to deepen trade cooperation between Canada and Indonesia, including within the framework of the ICA-CEPA.

In addition to post-trade deal economic cooperation, the two leaders also discussed the dynamics of the conflict in the Middle East and its impact on energy markets and the global economy, he said.

The Canadian Ambassador further stated that the ICA-CEPA, signed in Ottawa in September 2025, was Canada's first bilateral trade agreement with an ASEAN member country. With the implementation of this trade deal, Canada will find it easier to export its mainstay commodities to Indonesia, including wheat, potash, timber, and soybeans.

Moreover, the agreement provides the basis for tariff reductions or exemptions for more than 95 percent of Canadian commodities currently exported to Indonesia, he said.

Ambassador Dutton said that the Canadian parliament completed the ratification process for the ICA-CEPA in May 2026, and with Canada having finalized its part, he is now awaiting similar progress from Indonesia. He added that, with ongoing developments, the agreement is expected to become fully effective by the end of this year.

Beyond discussions on the ICA-CEPA and global developments, the Indonesian President and the Canadian Prime Minister also reviewed progress on negotiations for the Canada–ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Ambassador Dutton added that Prime Minister Carney welcomed Indonesia’s continued support in advancing these shared goals.

Representatives of the two countries signed the ICA-CEPA in Ottawa, Canada, on September 24, 2025. President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Mark Carney were present.

Implementing the ICA-CEPA is expected to increase Indonesian exports to Canada to $11.8 billion by 2030. This would result in a 0.12 percent increase in national GDP and a 0.38 percent increase in investment.
