TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with Chinese President Xi Jinping for a bilateral meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The meeting occurred after the commemoration of China's 80th anniversary of its victory in the People's War.
During the meeting, Prabowo expressed appreciation for President Xi's invitation to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) High-Level Conference in Tianjin and the celebration in Beijing. "The Head of State expressed regret for being unable to attend the SCO HLC," a statement from the Presidential Secretariat read on Thursday, August 4, 2025.
The head of state also conveyed gratitude for the warm welcome extended to him and the Indonesian delegation since their arrival in Beijing. Prabowo also mentioned his previous meeting with President Xi during a state visit to Beijing in November 2024.
"The head of state views that the meeting was a significant milestone in the strategic relationship between the two countries," as stated in a report from the Presidential Secretariat.
In line with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to deepen the strategic partnership with China. This commitment is expected to strengthen the relationship between the two countries in several areas.
During the meeting, Prabowo and Xi discussed the planned giant sea wall project to be constructed along the northern coast of Java. "The bilateral meeting in Beijing also reflects the shared views of both countries in maintaining regional stability and strengthening international cooperation," stated the Presidential Secretariat.
Prabowo decided to travel to Beijing after previously canceling the visit due to domestic protests the previous week. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that Prabowo flew to Beijing on Tuesday night, September 2, 2025, to attend President Xi Jinping's invitation, which was initially scheduled for August 31, 2025.
Prasetyo stated that the President's reason for proceeding with the visit was a request from the Chinese government for Prabowo to attend the Chinese military parade for at least one day. "The President, in making the decision, certainly took into account all aspects related to the dynamics in the homeland," he said.
Prasetyo mentioned that the head of state had monitored the domestic situation before departing for China. Prabowo received reports from his staff indicating that the situation in the country was gradually returning to normal. This prompted him to travel to China, even if only for one day.
