TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) reports a continued increase in public debt from the banking industry’s buy now, pay later (BNPL) services. In July 2025, consumer pay-later debt in banks reached Rp24.05 trillion, up from Rp22.99 trillion the previous month.
"The portion of banking buy now, pay later (BNPL) credit is recorded at 0.30 percent of total banking credit and continues to show high annual growth," said Dian Ediana Rae, OJK’s Executive Head of Banking Supervision, in a press release on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
This portion has steadily increased from 0.28 percent of total banking credit just one month prior.
The number of bank accounts using this service also grew. According to the Financial Information Service System (SLIK), the number of pay later accounts in banks reached 28.25 million in July 2025, an increase from 26.96 million in June and 24.79 million in May.
The pay later credit in multi-finance companies is also on the rise. SLIK data shows that pay later financing in these companies reached Rp8.81 trillion in July 2025, marking a significant annual growth of 56.74 percent. This is a slight increase from the 55.75 percent growth recorded the previous month.
