TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Cooperatives Ferry Juliantono stated that the Red and White Cooperative can collaborate with any entity, including private retail giants such as Indomaret and Alfamart. This partnership is intended to accommodate products that are not currently supplied by local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
"We can certainly collaborate on the distribution of goods already manufactured by private firms," he remarked during a meeting at the Mega Bank Tower on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
Ferry noted that the presence of these two retail chains depends on the specific regulations of each region. Indeed, both Alfamart and Indomaret have already expanded their footprint into rural areas.
The Red and White Village Cooperative must compete with these increasingly ubiquitous private retail outlets. Regarding potential cooperation, Ferry claimed to have already initiated communication with the entrepreneurs behind the Indomaret and Alfamart networks.
Previously, Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Yandri Susanto argued that Alfamart and Indomaret have led to the decline of many traditional small shops and MSMEs. Each of these retail chains has currently deployed more than 20,000 units across Indonesia.
However, the cooperative functions similarly to private retail by selling various basic necessities. Other products offered by the cooperative include fertilizers and LPG canisters.
"Therefore, the presence of the Red and White Village Cooperative is indeed the optimal solution," Yandri stated during a Working Meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
The government aims to establish 80,000 cooperative units within the next two years. Currently, there are approximately 24,000 units in operation, with a target to reach 30,000 units by the first quarter of 2026.
