TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said a proposal to cut the salaries of government ministers is still under discussion and will be reviewed in a meeting scheduled in the coming days.

Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, Teddy said several options related to the proposal were still being considered.

“The key point is that these ideas will be discussed in meetings over the next few days,” Teddy said.

He stressed that no decision has been made on whether ministers’ salaries will be reduced.

“We’ll see later. There is no decision yet,” he added.

Teddy also declined to elaborate further, instead directing reporters to ask the official who first raised the idea.

“Ask the one who mentioned it yesterday — who was that?” he said.

Earlier, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said he would not object to a possible salary cut for ministers, though he emphasized that any decision would depend on President Prabowo Subianto.

“If it’s for lawmakers, I don’t know. But for ministers, that’s fine — we’ll see what the President decides,” Purbaya said at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Jakarta on Monday, April 6.

At the time, Purbaya estimated that a potential salary cut could be around 25 percent.

“Maybe around 25 percent,” he said.

In a separate statement, Purbaya said the government is considering setting mandatory spending-cut targets for ministries and state agencies as part of efforts to improve efficiency in the state budget, or APBN, amid growing global economic uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

He said the Finance Ministry would identify spending components that could be postponed, with efficiency measures focused on programs seen as having limited impact or slow contributions to national economic growth.

Beyond trimming program budgets, the idea of cutting salaries for ministers and deputy ministers has also emerged as part of the broader cost-saving push.

Purbaya voiced support for the proposal, calling it a concrete sign of solidarity among senior officials in reducing state spending.

“I agree. That would be good,” he said when asked about the plan.
