1. Jakarta Police Say They're Stepping Up Daily Patrols After Wave of Protests
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have intensified large-scale patrols following incidents of vandalism and unrest during protests that have taken place since August 25, 2025. The patrols are intended to restore public confidence and ensure safety across the capital.
“It’s still ongoing. Essentially, this is part of our routine activities. The patrols by Bhabinkamtibmas (Community Police Officers) are carried out regularly,” said Jakarta Police spokesperson Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi outside the Parliament Building in Central Jakarta on Friday, September 5, 2025.
According to Ade Ary, the patrols are conducted every day at 04:00 PM and 08:00 PM. All 13 district police commands under Jakarta Metro’s jurisdiction are taking part.
2. Indonesian Parliament Issues 6-Point Plan in Response to 17+8 People's Demands
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, read out the results of the DPR's factional agreement in response to the 17+8 People's Demands. The DPR held an internal meeting on Thursday, September 4, to address several demands made to the institution.
Dasco stated that the closed-door meeting, led by DPR Speaker Puan Maharani, resulted in a six-point agreement. "The first point is that the DPR agreed to stop providing housing allowances to DPR members, effective from August 31, 2025," he said at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Friday, September 5, 2025.
Previously, DPR members for the 2024-2025 period received a housing allowance of Rp50 million per month as compensation for the abolition of official residences. The DPR revoked the allowance as it had sparked massive protests from late August up to the present. This demand was also included in the 17+8 People's Demands, one of which had a short-term deadline of today.
3. Monash Research: August 2025 Protests Were Class Explosion, Not Anomaly
The August 2025 public protests, marked by a palpable anti-elite sentiment and social class polarization, were not a spontaneous event. According to a new analysis from the Monash Data and Democracy Research Hub, this dynamic is the culmination of political and social frustrations that have been building since the 2024 election.
The research team analyzed nearly 10 million digital conversations across social media and news platforms, focusing on 13,780 original posts from August 25 to 31, 2025. Their findings revealed that 29.1% of the conversations were classified as toxic, with a sharp increase between August 28 and 30. This spike coincided with the escalation of violence following the death of online ride-hailing driver Affan Kurniawan.
"This polarization stems from the tension between privileged groups, political elites, officials, and economic stakeholders versus the vulnerable working and middle classes. The August protests only reaffirm this gap," said Derry Wijaya, Co-Director of Monash Data and Democracy Research, in a report co-authored with Ika Idris.
