1. Japan Sends 118 Teachers to Assist Japanese Learning in Indonesia
Japan Foundation will once again dispatch individuals from Japan to assist in teaching the Japanese language in Indonesian schools through the NIHONGO Partners program. This program has been running since 2014 and is now entering its 11th year.
Japan Foundation's Publication Officer, Abdul Barry Sutan Pulungan, explained that one aspect of this program involves sending native speakers to high schools to serve as assistant teachers.
"So, in the Japanese language subject that will be taught in those schools, there will be one local teacher and one native Japanese teacher," he said at the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta on Friday, August 22, 2025. Abdul also emphasized that the Japanese individuals will not replace the role of local teachers, but will only assist them.
2. City in Japan Proposes 2-Hour Daily Smartphone Limit
The city of Toyoake in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, has announced a new and controversial plan: to limit the use of smartphones and other electronic devices for all residents to just two hours per day. The regulation is also intended for adults.
The draft regulation will be submitted to the city council meeting next week. If passed, the rule will take effect on October 1, according to Japan Today, Friday, August 22, 2025. The regulation limits residents to a maximum of two hours per day of use of mobile phones, tablets, gaming devices, and computers. Exceptions are provided for work and study purposes.
3. Less Than a Year in Office, Prabowo's Cabinet Hit by Corruption Case
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) officially designated Immanuel Ebenezer, known as Noel, as a suspect in the alleged corruption case within the Ministry of Manpower. Noel had previously served as Deputy Minister of Manpower before being dismissed from his position on the same day he was designated a suspect, on Friday, August 22, 2025.
KPK arrested Noel in a sting operation on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. He is suspected of receiving a kickback of Rp3 billion from extorting payments for the issuance of occupational safety and health certificates performed by 13 of his subordinates. The extortion involved demanding that laborers processing the certificates pay Rp6 million instead of the rightful Rp300,000.
Noel's fraudulent actions mark the first corruption case involving a member of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's cabinet. This black mark comes in the tenth month since Prabowo's administration commenced in October 2024.
