TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total lunar eclipse is expected to occur in seven stages on Monday, September 8, 2025, with the penumbral eclipse phase beginning the day before at 10:26 p.m. Jakarta Time (WIB). A partial eclipse may be visible as early as 11:26 p.m. WIB on Sunday, September 7.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the total eclipse is likely to begin at 12:37 a.m. on Monday, reaching its peak at 1:11 a.m. The total eclipse will conclude at 1:53 a.m., followed by the end of the partial eclipse phase at 2:56 a.m., and the end of the penumbral eclipse at 3:56 a.m.
Blood Moon
"The eclipse will cause the Moon to appear red in the night sky," according to the BMKG's forecast. This event is also called a blood moon.
This reddish hue on the moon is caused by a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering, which occurs when sunlight is dispersed by air molecules in Earth's atmosphere. As sunlight passes through the atmosphere, shorter-wavelength light, typically blue, is scattered more widely.
In contrast, longer wavelength light, such as red, passes through the atmosphere and reaches the surface of the Moon, giving it a distinctive reddish glow.
The BMKG projects that four solar and lunar eclipse events will occur throughout 2025. The total lunar eclipse on March 14 will be visible from several regions in Eastern Indonesia. While there will be a partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025, it will not be observable from Indonesia. The year will also feature a total lunar eclipse on September 7 and a partial solar eclipse on September 21.
Quoting the Langit Selatan Bandung community page on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, astronomical observers in certain areas of Papua may be able to view a partial eclipse on Sunday night, September 7. However, the Moon is expected to set before the penumbral eclipse concludes. This means the sun will rise before this final lunar eclipse phase ends.
