TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia expressed its support for the Conference on Disarmament's call for nuclear-weapon states to comply with the principle of providing notification before testing ballistic missiles and similar weapons.
"Indonesia supports the initiative to urge early notification, as it encourages transparency and confidence-building efforts," said Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by ANTARA.
Indonesia believes that providing notification before a ballistic missile test can reduce the risk of misperception and miscalculation, especially since the test involves large, deadly weapons, Nabyl said.
Furthermore, Indonesia hopes that efforts to increase transparency regarding weapons testing will become part of the shared goal of ending the nuclear arms race. This step, he said, must also result in a commitment from nuclear-weapon states to fulfill their commitments and obligations to carry out disarmament.
Previously, 41 countries issued a joint statement urging nuclear-weapon states to comply with the notification protocol at least 24 hours before conducting tests of long-range ballistic missiles and similar weapons.
The statement was delivered at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland, and released by the United States Representative to International Organizations on Tuesday, August 11.
"Conducting nuclear-capable ballistic missile tests without sufficient advance notice and detail is dangerous and disrupts the peace and security of relevant nations in proximity to these tests," the joint statement said, as reported by Anadolu.
The countries participating in the conference expressed concern that ignoring standard procedures before a test could increase the risk of miscalculation and undermine global stability.
They requested that nuclear-armed states provide at least 24 hours' notice before launching intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), or space launch vehicles (SLVs).
The statement came after China's test-launch of a nuclear-powered submarine-launched ballistic missile in July, which took place just hours after it had notified several Pacific nations.
