TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto departed for Doha, Qatar, on Friday, September 12, 2025. The Head of State will meet with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Cabinet Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that President Prabowo decided to come to Qatar after Israel attacked Doha on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
According to Teddy, the President's departure is a gesture of solidarity and support from the Indonesian government to Qatar. "Indonesia's direct support for the government and people of Qatar," said Teddy as quoted from his official statement on Friday, September 12, 2025.
Previously, the Israeli military stated that the explosions seen and heard in the Qatari capital, Doha, were an attempt to assassinate senior Hamas leaders and officials of the Palestinian group, as reported by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
This was the first attack carried out by Israel in Qatar, a key mediator in the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas. As reported by CNN, Hamas leaders have used the Qatari capital as a headquarters outside of Gaza for years.
The attack on Qatar, an ally of the United States and a key mediator in the recent international dispute between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, marks a significant escalation in Israel's multifront conflict in the Middle East.
Israeli media, citing a senior Israeli official, said the attack was aimed at top Hamas leaders, including Khalil al-Hayya, the main negotiator of the ceasefire in Gaza.
Israel has carried out airstrikes in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria, as well as daily attacks in the occupied West Bank in Palestine. The military released a statement on Tuesday, stating, "The IDF and Shin Bet confirmed that they had targeted Hamas’s leadership in Doha with a strike carried out by the Israeli Air Force."
"The members of the leadership who were struck led the terror organization’s activities for years, and are directly responsible for carrying out the October 7 massacre and waging the war against the State of Israel."
The statement noted that, before the attack, steps were taken to minimize casualties among non-combatants, including the use of precision weapons and additional intelligence information.
Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari stated that his country strongly condemns the attack, which he believes was carried out on buildings housing several members of Hamas' political bureau. "This criminal attack constitutes a flagrant violation of all international laws and norms and a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents of Qatar," the statement read.
In addition to vehemently condemning this attack, Qatar emphasizes that it will not tolerate Israel's reckless behavior and continued Israeli interventions in regional security, as well as any actions that target its security and sovereignty. An investigation is ongoing at the highest level, and further details will be announced as soon as they are available.
