TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has launched the second phase of the Sustainable Landscape Program Indonesia (SLPI), a joint initiative with Switzerland and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that aims to promote sustainable land management while supporting rural communities and commodity production.
The program, led by Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs with support from the Embassy of Switzerland and UNDP, will run from 2026 to 2029 with CHF1.6 million in funding. It will be implemented in five provinces: Aceh, Riau, Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan.
SLPI focuses on improving how landscapes are managed by bringing together government institutions, local communities, farmers, and businesses to balance environmental protection with economic development. The program also supports sustainable commodity production, livelihood improvement, and stronger cooperation between stakeholders.
The second phase builds on the first phase, which was carried out from 2023 to 2025 with support from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The new phase aims to expand pilot projects into broader systems by improving coordination, monitoring, and long-term financing.
“As Switzerland and Indonesia celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, we see SLPI as a strong example of how our partnership delivers practical results,” said Olivier Zehnder, Switzerland’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN.
“Through Phase I, we demonstrated that sustainable landscape management can protect forests, improve livelihoods, and strengthen market opportunities. Through Phase II, we aim to sustain and scale these gains and embed them in the systems that will carry them forward,” he added.
The initiative comes as Indonesia seeks to strengthen food security, improve climate resilience, and expand economic opportunities in rural areas while protecting natural resources.
Aretha Aprilia, Head of Nature and Low Carbon Development Unit UNDP Indonesia, said the program supports collaboration between farmers, government agencies, and private-sector actors to develop solutions that benefit both communities and the environment.
“Phase II will help embed these platforms within national institutions, ensuring that the progress achieved can be sustained and scaled over time,” Aprilia said.
The second phase will focus on stronger coordination between central and regional governments, impact monitoring, domestic funding opportunities, and greater private-sector involvement. The goal is to ensure sustainable landscape management becomes part of long-term development planning rather than remaining limited to individual projects.
The Sustainable Landscape Program Indonesia was launched in 2023 to support Indonesia’s efforts to manage natural resources sustainably while creating economic opportunities for communities dependent on landscape-based activities.
