'Insidious: Out of the Further' Returns with Fresh Terrors

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The long-running supernatural franchise returns to theaters with its sixth installment, Insidious: Out of the Further, serving as a prequel to Insidious: The Red Door. Directed and written by Jacob Chase, the film introduces fresh faces while maintaining ties to the series' established mythology.

The narrative follows Gemma, a dental hygienist portrayed by Amelia Eve, who raises her young daughter, played by Island Austin, while carrying deep-seated childhood trauma regarding her mother's mysterious death.

The central horror concept focuses on Gemma's ability to cross into the astral plane known as the Further. Unlike previous entries, Gemma can inadvertently draw entities back into the real world, causing undead spirits to latch onto her and threaten her family's safety.

As malicious spirits begin targeting her family, Gemma must navigate her abilities to protect her daughter from a shared supernatural fate.

Lin Shaye reprises her role as the medium Elise Rainier, guiding Gemma through the realm. The supporting cast includes Maisie Richardson-Sellers as a spiritually connected tattoo artist who assists Gemma in countering the malevolent forces.

Early critical reactions compiled by Rotten Tomatoes and The Guardian highlight a mix of familiar jump scares and surreal horror elements. Reviewers note that the film borrows atmospheric beats from classic nightmare logic, featuring standout sequences like a suspenseful exploration inside a child's pillow fort that expands into endless, narrow corridors.

Performance-wise, critics praise Amelia Eve for bringing genuine emotional depth to her traumatized character, while young co-star Island Austin delivers a grounding presence in the film's second half.

Writing for Daily Dead, critic Matt Donato noted that the entry "retains enough of the franchise's signature chills to fulfill expectations." Meanwhile, IndieWire critic Ryan Lattanzio remarked that the film serves as "a solid entry point for newbies" that does not require extensive knowledge of prior installments.

Insidious: Out of the Further is currently screening in Indonesian theaters following its August 19 release, ahead of its debut in the US and UK on August 21.
