TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) is intensifying air quality monitoring following reports of ash deposits and strengthening coordination with the BMKG, PVMBG, BPBD, and the Health Agency in response to the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia.
Jakarta Environmental Agency Head Dudi Gardesi stated that this monitoring serves as the basis for issuing warnings and adjusting measures to protect residents.
“Any change in conditions must be immediately followed by updated information so that residents know what steps to take. The protection of sanitation workers in the field must also be ensured,” Dudi said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Sunday.
According to BMKG information as of September 6, 2026, at 05:00 WIB, the spread of volcanic ash covers parts of Jakarta.
Dudi advised residents in areas affected by ashfall or reduced air quality to limit non-essential outdoor activities and postpone outdoor exercise.
“If you must go out in an ash-affected area, wear an N95 mask or an equivalent that fits tightly over your nose and mouth,” he said.
Furthermore, during ashfall, the public is advised to take shelter indoors and keep doors and windows closed to minimize ash infiltration.
Children, the elderly, and individuals with asthma, lung disease, or heart disease require special attention.
School administrators, event organizers, and employers are urged to adjust outdoor activities based on local conditions.
“Regarding sanitation workers, I have instructed my staff to prioritize the availability of masks and eye protection, as well as safe work arrangements,” Dudi said.
If ash deposits accumulate at home, residents are advised to clean them up using a damp cloth or mop.
Avoid dry sweeping or blowing the ash, as this can cause it to become airborne again.
"Wear a mask and eye protection while cleaning, and protect food, drinking water, and water storage containers from the ash," he added. Residents experiencing persistent respiratory issues or eye irritation are advised to visit a healthcare facility.
In the event of severe shortness of breath or other emergencies, residents should immediately seek medical assistance and contact Jakarta Siaga 112. This emergency service is available 24 hours a day, toll-free.
