TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinians gathered at several cafes in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Sunday, July 19, 2026, to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup final together and celebrate Spain's victory over Argentina.
The screening event provided a space for Gaza residents to forget for a few hours the pressures of war and the hardships of their daily lives in the Palestinian enclave.
Most Gaza residents watching the 2026 World Cup final supported Spain because of its long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people.
“We came together to support Spain because it has stood by the Palestinian people for years,” said Numan Abdullah, a Gazan who attended the 2026 World Cup final screening, as quoted from Antara, citing Anadolu.
Abdullah said the support also conveyed a message of peace and solidarity with countries that support Palestine.
"We are a people who seek peace," he added.
Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in Sunday's final.
This victory marked Spain's second, following their first in 2010.
Meanwhile, Argentina failed to defend their world title after emerging victorious in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.
