Prabowo Aide Explains Why TNI Is Authorized to Protect Prosecutors

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Special Presidential Staff for Communications Hasan Nasbi has explained why President Prabowo Subianto signed Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 66 of 2025, which provides a legal framework for military protection of prosecutors.

The regulation came under scrutiny after Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel were deployed to guard the residence of former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah before he was named a corruption suspect.

At the time, the Attorney General's Office had requested military assistance while police were investigating allegations involving Febrie.

Hasan said the regulation was issued to ensure that law enforcement officials can carry out their duties without interference.

"The President issued this regulation to ensure the smooth implementation of law enforcement duties in the field and to prevent any disruptions," Hasan told reporters at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

He explained that the regulation allows prosecutors and other law enforcement personnel to receive security support from both the TNI and the National Police when necessary.

Addressing the case involving Febrie, Hasan reiterated President Prabowo's commitment to combating corruption, describing it as one of the administration's key priorities.

"The fight against corruption will continue without compromise. That is the President's commitment," he said.

Febrie's residence in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, was guarded by TNI personnel on July 8, while police were still investigating the case. He was formally named a corruption suspect three days later, on July 11.

TNI Information Center Chief Brig. Gen. Muhammad Nas denied suggestions that the military deployment was linked to police searches conducted at several locations tied to the investigation.

"Information regarding police searches at several locations is a separate matter and falls under the authority of the police," he said.

However, Nas confirmed that the security deployment had been carried out at the request of the Attorney General's Office.

"It is true that the security measures were undertaken following a request from the Attorney General's Office," he told Tempo on July 9.

According to Nas, the deployment was conducted in accordance with the mechanisms set out under Presidential Regulation No. 66 of 2025 concerning the protection of prosecutors.

Article 9 of the regulation outlines several forms of protection that may be provided by the TNI, including security for prosecutorial institutions, personnel support and escorts for prosecutors carrying out their duties, as well as "other forms of protection in accordance with strategic conditions and operational needs."

The regulation has drawn public attention amid the high-profile investigation into Febrie and broader concerns over the role of the military in supporting civilian law enforcement institutions.
