TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto continued his working visit to Kalimantan on Saturday, August 22, 2026, traveling to Central Kalimantan after inspecting efforts to tackle forest and land fires in neighboring West Kalimantan.
According to a live broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel, Prabowo arrived at Tjilik Riwut Airport in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, on Saturday afternoon.
He then chaired a coordination meeting on the province's forest and land fire response at the Forward Air Task Force Command Post.
Several senior officials attended the meeting, including State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Maruli Simanjuntak, and Deputy National Police Chief Comr. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo.
Central Kalimantan Governor Agustiar Sabran, Tambun Bungai Regional Military Command Chief Maj. Gen. Zainul Arifin, and Central Kalimantan Police Chief Insp. Gen. Iwan Kurniawan also attended.
"After visiting the post in West Kalimantan, we are now here at the Forward Post in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan. Several ministers, the Army chief of staff, deputy police chief, governor, military commander and Central Kalimantan police chief are present," Cabinet Secretary Lt. Col. Teddy Indra Wijaya said as he opened the meeting.
Nearly 20,000 Hotspots Recorded
Ahmad Toyib, head of the Central Kalimantan Regional Disaster Management and Firefighting Agency (BPBPK), reported that the province recorded 19,992 hotspots between January 1 and August 22, 2026.
During the same period, authorities recorded 1,639 forest and land fire incidents, with firefighting and mitigation efforts covering 4,499.21 hectares of land.
"This data is based on daily reports from all 14 regencies and municipalities in Central Kalimantan, which we collect every day through the Central Kalimantan Forest and Land Fire Task Force's operations center," Ahmad said.
He added that 13 of the province's 14 regencies and municipalities had declared an emergency preparedness status for forest and land fires.
Meanwhile, satellite analysis by the Forestry Ministry estimated that forest and land fires had affected 7,634.46 hectaresin Central Kalimantan, making it the province with the ninth-largest burned area nationwide.
Prabowo Inspects Fire Response in Kalimantan
Before traveling to Central Kalimantan, Prabowo chaired a separate coordination meeting on forest and land fire management at the Supadio Air Base Air Task Force Command Post in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
The meeting was attended by Prasetyo, Tito, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, TNI Commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto, National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and State Intelligence Agency Chief Muhammad Herindra, among other officials.
Prabowo said his visit to Kalimantan was intended to assess the situation on the ground and obtain the latest reports on the fires.
"I came to see the actual situation here. Now, I want to know who can give me a presentation on the situation," Prabowo said in Pontianak on Saturday, according to the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube broadcast.
