TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Not the Vice-Presidential Palace, nor the official residence on Jalan Diponegoro in Central Jakarta. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka chose to live in a house on Jalan Situbondo in Menteng, Central Jakarta, after he was inaugurated on October 20, 2024. The two-story residence stands just one building away from the house once used by Joko Widodo, Gibran's father, to assemble his Transition Team in 2014.
After Gibran moved into the house, military bivouacs were erected on the sidewalks nearby. On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, three crew- cut members of the Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres) sat inside one of the tents. At least four similar bivouacs stood at corners along the streets leading to the residence of Jokowi's eldest son. Police officers and soldiers guarded the posts.
Syaiful, a security officer assigned to Jalan Situbondo, said local residents often complained because their neighborhood had suddenly become a zone reserved for very important persons. "The area has to remain sterile even though this is a residential complex," he said in Menteng.
Syaiful said he had on several occasions seen Gibran jogging around the Menteng area in the late afternoon. According to him, the former Mayor of Solo usually left the house when the sun was beginning to set, at around 4pm. His running route varied from day to day.
