The shower is caused by debris from Comet Thatcher, which orbits the sun every 415.5 years. At its peak, the Lyrid meteor shower can produce up to 10 to 20 meteors per hour under clear, dark skies.
In the United States, the 2026 Lyrid meteor shower will hit peak activity at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT) on April 22. Because this peak occurs during daylight hours, the optimal viewing window shifts to the pre-dawn hours.
